Why publish a game on Roblox?

Before diving into the steps, think about why you might want to publish a game on Roblox. Some key reasons to publish a game include:

• Monetization: You can earn Robux (the platform’s virtual currency) by creating in-game purchases, selling game passes, or premium subscriptions.
• Exposure: Roblox has millions of active users who can discover, play, and share your game, potentially making your game popular overnight.
• Experience: Learning how to code and publish a game on Roblox can boost your skills in game design, coding, and marketing, which are valuable for anyone interested in a career in game development.

How to Publish a Game on Roblox

Publishing your game on Roblox is easy and takes only a few minutes. 

Before publishing your game, make sure it meets Roblox’s guidelines and community standards. The platform has a list of prohibited content, including explicit language, inappropriate content, and offensive themes. You don’t want your game to be taken down after going live, so it’s essential to ensure compliance.

You’ve probably been saving your game along the way. Doing that saves a copy of your game locally. Publishing is saving a copy of your place to the Roblox servers. Roblox recommends publishing every 10 min. After it’s been published, it can be accessed in Roblox Studio from any machine, not just yours.

To publish a new Roblox game, follow these 3 steps:

1. Open your game in Roblox Studio, select File -> Publish to Roblox

2. Fill in the Basic Info fields

Provide these details about your game:

• Name: Choose an attention-grabbing name that reflects your game’s content.
• Description: Write a concise description of your game. The description should give potential players a sense of what the game is about and what to expect. It can include gameplay features, goals, or challenges.
• Creator: Give credit to yourself or a group.
• Devices: Select the platforms where your game will be playable (PC, mobile, tablet, console).
• Team Create: Enable group collaboration and autosave to the cloud.
• Data Sharing: Your experience’s data will be used to train Roblox Gen AI.

3. When ready, click the Create button

Your game is now published to the Roblox platform! You can double-check that your game is published in the Experiences section of Roblox Studio. 

By default, game playability is set to “Private” and only accessible to you and members of your group with the correct permissions. That means, you have to take a few more steps to make it available publicly. You’ll see the playability status at the bottom of the icon in the Experiences section. 

When you’re ready, take these next steps to publish your game for public play.

Publish Your Roblox Game Publicly

You can also set your game for public play. This is your chance to showcase your game to new players and grow your audience. You’ll want to configure a few additional settings before launching your game to the public:

• Game Accessibility: By default, newly published games are set to private. To make your game accessible to other Roblox players, go to the Game Settings section and set the game to Public. This will allow players to find and play your game.
• Monetization: If you want to earn Robux through your game, you’ll need to configure the monetization options. Go to the Monetization tab in your game’s settings to enable Game Passes, Developer Products, or subscriptions. You can also place advertisements or sponsor your game to increase its visibility on the platform.
• Permissions: Adjust permissions to control who can edit the game. You can allow collaborators, such as friends or other developers, to help you improve the game. Roblox offers several permission settings to customize who has access to specific aspects of your game.
• Social Links: Want to connect with your players? You can add social links (such as YouTube, Twitter, and Discord) to your game’s page, making it easy for players to follow your content and updates.

If your game is already published, make it public using these steps:

1. Open Roblox Studio and select Experiences
2. Click the ⋯ in the corner of the thumbnail for the game you want to publish
3. Select Make Public

If your game is unpublished, make it public using these steps:

Your games don’t have to be published to make them public. Open your unpublished game and follow these steps:

1. Select File and click Game Settings

2. Click Permissions
3. Select Public and click Save

You can choose to set your playability to Friends, Public, or Private.

How to Publish a Roblox Game to a Group

Often, creating a top experience requires the collaboration of multiple developers with different skills. Roblox enables you to contribute to experiences independently or work together as a group. Making the creator of your Roblox game a group can offer better collaboration, security, and community-building tools.

Publish a Roblox Game to a Group

1. Select File → Publish to Roblox to open the publishing window.
2. Fill in the Basic Info fields
3. For the Creator field, select the group for which you’d like to publish the place.
4. When ready, click the Create button.

How to Publish Your Roblox Game for Mobile

When you publish a game, you can select the devices available to play your game. To play your game on mobile, select Phone and/or Tablet.

Follow these steps to publish a new game for mobile:

1. Open your game in Roblox Studio, select File -> Publish to Roblox

2. Fill in the Basic Info fields and select Phone or Tablet

3. When ready, click the Create button

For games that are already published, open your published game and follow these steps:

4. In the Basic Info section, scroll down to Playable Devices

How long does it take for a Roblox game to show up in the Roblox marketplace?

Once you publish a Roblox game, it can take a few hours to a few days or weeks for it to appear in the Roblox marketplace. 

Roblox has a moderation system that reviews every game before it becomes publicly available, which can add a small delay to the process. 

How long it takes will depend on factors like the moderation queue and any potential issues with your game’s details or compatibility. If there are any issues with your game’s code or assets, it might be held back for further review.

Your game’s popularity, like how many visits and likes, can also affect how long it takes and where your game shows up in the search results.

Some published games may not show up in the search results. For the best chance at having your game show up, share it with friends and promote it to help gain popularity.

How much does it cost to publish a Roblox game?

It’s free and doesn’t require any paid licenses to develop an experience in Roblox and publish it using Roblox Studio. There are no upfront costs to design and build your game in Roblox Studio.

Download and Install Roblox Studio

This is the first step to bringing your game ideas to life! It only takes a few minutes to download and install Roblox Studio. 

Use these steps to download and install Roblox on your Mac or PC.

How to Download and Install Roblox Studio

1. Visit https://create.roblox.com/.

2. Click Start Creating.

3. Click Download Studio in the pop-up.

4. Find the Studio installer in your downloads and double-click the file to start the installation.

• On Windows, the file is RobloxStudioInstaller.exe
• On Mac, the file is RobloxStudioInstaller.dmg

5. After Studio finishes installing, it will automatically launch Roblox Studio.

6. Sign in with your Roblox account. If you don’t have an account, click Sign Up to create one or visit roblox.com/CreateAccount.

Customize Roblox Studio for Development

You can customize not only your games, but Roblox Studio to fit your development needs. This includes adjusting the graphics quality, customizing the script editor, or changing the theme. 

Developers often customize Studio to make development easier or more efficient.

To customize your Roblox Studio settings:

Here you can edit all of the settings for the Studio, Script Editor, Diagnostics, Network, Physics, and Rendering.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Can’t Download Roblox Studio?

If you’re having trouble downloading Roblox Studio, try the following:

• Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
• Clear Your Browser Cache: Sometimes, clearing your cache can resolve download issues.
• Disable Antivirus Software Temporarily: Some antivirus programs might mistakenly block the download. Temporarily disable it and try again.

Roblox Studio Crashes on Launch

If Roblox Studio crashes when you try to open it:

• Update Your Graphics Drivers: Outdated graphics drivers can cause issues. Make sure your drivers are up to date. On PC/Windows, the Roblox application requires DirectX 10 or higher feature-level support. 
• Reinstall Roblox Studio: Sometimes a fresh install can fix the problem. Uninstall Roblox Studio, download it again, and reinstall it.

Explore the Roblox Studio Interface

Before you start building your game, you should explore the Roblox Studio interface. Get familiar with the different features and abilities. 

Toolbar

The toolbar is at the top of the Roblox Studio interface. The buttons and tools visible in the bar change when you click on the Home, Model, Avatar, Test, View, and Plugins tabs.

• Home tab: basic tools for manipulating 3D objects and testing your experience.
• Model tab: tools for manipulating 3D objects in the workspace, creating detailed models, working with physical constraints, and adding advanced objects.
• Avatar tab: specialized tools for creating and fitting accessories, importing custom meshes, building default rigs, and creating animations.
• Test tab: contains tools for testing an experience, simulating multiple clients, and emulating different devices.
• View tab: lets you toggle the various windows of Studio as well as several display features.
• Plugins tab: contains tools for managing plugins, configuring localization, and creating animations. Any plugins you install can also add buttons to this tab.

3D Viewport

The 3D viewport shows a preview of your place. In the viewport, you can move the camera around your virtual world, manipulate objects with the mouse, and playtest an experience without leaving Roblox Studio.

Toolbox

The Toolbox lets you access any assets you’ve published and search the Creator Store for assets from Roblox or the community.

The Creator Store contains a selection of models, images, meshes, audio, plugins, videos, and fonts made by Roblox and Roblox community members. It also includes all of the creations that you or your group have distributed to the Creator Store.

Asset Manager

The Asset Manager lets you manage the assets, like places, images, meshes, packages, audio, and models, within your experience. It also provides a way to bulk import large groups of assets.

In Roblox Studio, assets import into your Workspace (in the Explorer) and into the Toolbox or Inventory section of the Asset Manager.

Output

The Output window, accessible from the View tab, displays errors captured from running scripts, messages from Roblox engine, messages from calls to print(), and errors from calls to warn(). 

Explorer

Roblox Studio’s Explorer is the primary windows for organizing elements in your 3D game. This is where you manage and organize objects (for example, characters and environmental assets).

The Explorer window shows a hierarchical list of every instance inside an experience. It uses a tree structure for the parent-child relationships between objects.

At the highest level of the hierarchy are the services; Workspace, for example, is where visible 3D content such as parts are stored.

Properties

The Properties window lets you adjust the properties of a selected object to change how it looks and behaves. 

Object properties are divided into sections; for example, a MeshPart includes sections like Appearance which allows you to change its color, material, transparency, and more.

At the bottom of the window, you can define custom attributes for an object, similar to its default properties. Attributes and their values are saved with your place/assets and they’re an ideal way for team members to experiment with different values during runtime, even if they don’t understand the underlying code.

Can you download Roblox Studio for mobile?

No, Roblox Studio is not available on mobile devices, including iOS and Android.

Roblox Studio was created for desktop use and requires Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, or 11 or macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and above.

View Your Created Games on Mobile

While you can’t download Roblox Studio on your mobile device, you can see the games that you have created. 

1. In your mobile browser, visit create.roblox.com
2. Click Log In and log in with your account information
3. Click the Settings menu in the top left
4. Click Creations

Here, you can view your experiences that are published in Roblox. You can also see experiences that are shared with you. However, you won’t be able to edit them.

Use Roblox Studio Lite

Another option to build games on mobile is a Roblox application called Studio Lite, which offers many similar features to Roblox Studio. It includes tutorials to help you build and script games. 

You cannot access your experiences from Roblox Studio and games created in Studio Lite can only be played by you. Publishing is currently disabled, but this is a way to practice building games when you only have a mobile device available.

Now that you’ve downloaded Roblox Studio and are familiar with the interface, you can create your first Roblox game.

Getting Started

To start scripting in Roblox, you’ll need to download and install Roblox Studio, the official development tool for creating Roblox games. 

How to Install Roblox Studio

To install Roblox Studio on your Windows or Mac computer:

1. Visit https://create.roblox.com/
2. Click the Start Creating button. A pop-up dialog displays.

3. In the pop-up dialog, click the Download Studio button.

4. Find the Studio installer in your browser’s download history and double-click the file.

• On Windows, the file is RobloxStudio.exe.
• On Mac, the file is RobloxStudio.dmg.

5. After Studio finishes installing, a pop-up confirmation displays. Click the Launch Studio button.
6. Sign in to Studio with your Roblox account to get started.

7. After you log in, click on the New button in the left-hand toolbar. You can then select a template from the available options, such as Baseplate.

After that, you can write your first script. 

Write Your First Lua Script

In Roblox Studio, you can insert a new Lua script into your game by: 

1. Navigating to the “Explorer” panel

If you don’t have the Explorer panel, go to the View tab and click Explorer to display it.

2. Right-clicking on the desired object (such as a part or a model)

3. Selecting “Insert Object” > “Script”

Maybe you heard about Roblox from your kids asking to play online with their friends. Or maybe you found out about it while researching online coding camps for kids. But wherever you heard about it, you’re wondering, “is Roblox safe for kids to be playing?”

No worries! That’s exactly the question that we’re here to answer.

CodeWizardsHQ regularly uses Roblox in our Roblox coding camps for kids because of its popularity and because it’s an extremely flexible platform. But we also take child safety seriously. We want to fully inform parents about what Roblox is capable of and of the risks inherent in its design.

Let’s dive in!

Roblox Gaming

First up, we’ll be taking a look at the Roblox game itself and explain a bit about what it is.

What is Roblox?

While it is usually described as being a game, Roblox is much closer to being an entire game publishing platform. It offers kids a huge variety of individual games to play. In one of Roblox’s most recent statistical analyses, they released that there were over 40 million different game worlds that had been generated by users!

Many of those are different instances of the same kinds of game, like Adopt Me! or Brookhaven, but even still, that’s a ton of games!

The individual games all vary in content and play style. There are escape room games, pet collection games, games where you play as a horse, or even lifestyle sim games where you live out a life in a virtual city. That huge variety of games means there are plenty of great Roblox games for kids out there.

But what’s really interesting is that the vast majority of these games are not made by Roblox itself, but by users who had an idea and decided to make it a game!

These games are often played on public servers where anyone can join and interact with other players, but games can also run on private servers.

Roblox Age Ratings

Since most Roblox content is user-generated, it’s really, really hard to give a single suggested age rating for the game. You can use the ESRB rating and the in-game age recommendations to determine if a specific experience is appropriate for your child.

Because of the user-generated content and the amount of online interaction that is capable inside Roblox, the ESRB (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) has given Roblox a T for Teen rating. Even so, there are games in Roblox that would be completely fine for a 5-year-old to play and games that aren’t ok for any kid to be playing.

So, is Roblox safe for kids under 13?

What age is Roblox for?

To address parental concerns around that disparity, Roblox released an in-game age rating system for games on the platform. These ratings go from “All Ages” to “17+”. They allow users to see what Roblox considers an appropriate age limit for different games.

Roblox Experience Guidelines and Age Recommendations

You can read the full details on what each age rating allows and doesn’t allow on the Roblox Support Website. I’ll include a short summary here, as well.

• All Ages : This content in Roblox is safe for kids
• 9+ : These games may contain “mild” levels of violence, bloodshed, or crude humor
• 13+ : These games may contain “moderate” levels of violence, bloodshed, or crude humor, and may also have unplayable gambling content in the game.
• 17+ : These games are only playable by users who have verified their age. This is done via uploading a selfie and a photo of their government ID. They may contain “strong” levels of violence, realistic blood, crude humor, romantic themes, the presence of alcohol, or unplayable gambling content.

It’s also worth noting that if your child is under 13, Roblox will automatically apply chat filters that should filter out inappropriate content and anything that could give away personal information. But even with the filters on, please be sure you talk to your kids about online chat safety!

Roblox Parental Controls

Age ratings are great for understanding which games might not be great for your kids to play. However, those games are still there. So, is Roblox safe for kids? 

Many parents want to be sure that their kids won’t accidentally click on a game meant for someone a bit older. One of the most obvious ways to do this is to use parent controls designed to prevent kids from having access to those games in the first place.

Does Roblox have parental controls?

Yes! Roblox does indeed have a few different options for parental controls. But, there is a little setup involved in getting them up and running.

Roblox divides out the different parts of parental controls into three main sections. These are Account Restrictions, Allowed Experiences, and Spend Restrictions. You can learn more about Roblox’s child safety tools on their support page, but I’ll also summarize their tools here.

• Account Restrictions – Enabling account restrictions locks a user out of in-game chat functionality and limits them to playing the games that are rated All Ages. This is the most restrictive way to set up a Roblox account but may be a good choice for younger kids.
• Allowed Experiences – Parents can set the child’s account to only allow experiences at or below a specified Age Rating. For instance, if a child’s account is set to only allow 9+ games, they will not be able to access 13+ rated games, even if they are over 13 years of age.
• Spend Restrictions – There are actually two different ways to set Spend Restrictions in Roblox. Parents can either set a monthly spend budget and/or receive Spend Notifications via email. Setting a monthly budget allows kids to spend up to a specified amount of money in-game. Enabling Spend Notifications sends parents an email when kids spend a specified amount of money, but does not directly stop kids from spending it.

Unfortunately, the Spend Restrictions parental controls only work on accounts of kids under 13 years of age, except in Korea. If your kid is 13 or older, these restrictions will not work.

How to Enable Account Restrictions

• Log in to your Roblox account
• Select the Settings option indicated by the gear icon or 3 dots
• Select Privacy option
• In the Account Restrictions section, press the toggle button to turn on Account Restrictions
• The toggle will turn green and the following message will be displayed “Account Restrictions is currently enabled”

How to Add a Parent Pin

• Log in to your Roblox account
• Select the Settings option indicated by the gear icon or 3 dots
• Select Parental Controls option
• In the Parent PIN section, press the toggle button on Parent PIN is disabled
• You will be asked to add a 4-digit PIN

• The toggle will turn green and the following message will be displayed “Parent PIN is enabled”

How to Enable Allowed Experiences

• Log in to your Roblox account
• Select the Settings option indicated by the gear icon or 3 dots
• Select Parental Controls option
• In the Allowed Experiences section, select from the options

How to Enable to Spend Restrictions

1. Log in to your Roblox account
2. Click the gear-icon located at the upper-right corner of the site
3. Select the Settings option indicated by the gear icon
4. Select Parental Controls option
5. Toggle the Monthly Spend Restriction option to On
6. Default input is 0 when the toggle is on
7. Input the desired monthly limit

How to monitor your child’s Roblox account

As a parent, you may want to know exactly what your child has been up to while playing Roblox. Unfortunately, Roblox’s child monitoring features are fairly limited.

Parents can check their children’s spending habits via the Spend Restrictions parental controls mentioned above if their child is under 13. However, if you want to know what your child has been playing, who they’ve been chatting with, or what they’ve been spending their money on, there’s not an easy option.

Roblox’s official stance is that you should log into your child’s account and go through the different game histories to see what they’ve been up to. It’s not an ideal solution, but so long as parents are familiar with how to get around inside Roblox, it can work.

Roblox Safety

Online services are increasingly becoming a normal way for people to interact with each other. However, as with the real world, some locations are safer places to visit than others.

If your kid is going to be spending time in Roblox, you may be wondering, is Roblox a safe place for my kid?

Roblox online interactions

Part of the appeal of playing Roblox games is the large amount of social interaction on the platform. Roblox allows players to interact with each other using:

• text chat
• voice chat
• new Roblox Connect video calls

The text chats and voice chats are pretty straight-forward. Kids can chat with other players in the same game with them, or with friends who are online, but in a different game. However, the video calls are a bit different from what you might expect. Instead of being able to see the other players, these calls use in-game avatar skins instead.

Kids under 13 years of age do not have access to either voice chat or video chat.

Is the chat on Roblox safe?

Roblox does make an effort to keep the in-game chats safe by including filters in the text chat. Their filters are designed to prevent kids of all ages from giving out personally identifiable information. And children under 13 have an extra level of filtering applied to remove inappropriate language. But no matter how good a filter is, it is possible that something could slip by.

A bit more worrisome is that, while Roblox doesn’t allow most links in text chats, it does allow external links to a handful of approved services. These include links to YouTube, Twitter (X), Discord, Facebook, and Twitch. Since these are external services, Roblox does not have the ability to see what happens at these links. That means kids can get access to unmonitored voice or video chats simply by clicking a link in a Roblox chat.

Roblox’s Text Filtering System

If you want to restrict who your child can chat with and who can start a chat with them, you’ll want to set limits on that in the Privacy tab of Roblox’s settings. You can read what Roblox has to say on their support page, but I’ll quickly summarize the options here.

• Who can message me? – This option controls who is able to send a direct message to your child. These are messages that can be sent whether your child is online or not and will remain in their message box.
• Who can chat with me in-app? – This option controls who can start a live chat with your child while they are logged into the game. These chats are like chat rooms where anyone in the rooms can talk with the room.
• Who can chat with me? – This option controls who can chat with your child inside of the different Roblox experiences. So, if your child is inside a public game server, this will control whether someone they don’t know who is also in that game can contact them, or not.

Are there child predators on Roblox?

The developers do their very best to keep Roblox safe for kids who use it. They require age verification to access certain features, including requiring government-issued identification. So, if Roblox becomes aware that one of their users is a child predator, then, of course, they will block that user from logging into the game! However, Roblox has more than 70 million daily active users and over 216 million monthly active users.

Simply put, no matter what safety precautions Roblox puts in place, it is impossible to guarantee that there are no child predators on their platform.

That being the case, it is extremely important to teach your kids how to interact with others online in a safe way. If you need help in teaching internet safety, I personally recommend Google’s Be Internet Awesome program as a starting point.

Tips to make Roblox safe for your kids

Because it is such a highly social online experience, Roblox has a high level of inherent risk. But if used right, it can also be very rewarding. It makes it easy to connect with friends and offers an online space where kids can learn useful skills, like how to make a Roblox game themselves!

Here are some tips to help make Roblox safe for kids:

• Be sure to teach your kids how to safely interact with people they don’t know, both offline and online.
• Use the parental control features available on Roblox to make sure kids cannot be contacted by strangers while playing.
• Teach your kids to be cautious about what links they click on in chats.
• If necessary, block users who interact with your children in inappropriate ways and report any inappropriate behavior to Roblox. (Learn how to report users in Roblox)

How much does Roblox cost?

If you’re just getting started with Roblox, you’re probably wondering how much Roblox is going to cost you. As it turns out, Roblox is completely free to play. But to get the most out of the game, your kids will likely want to buy some of the in game items, like cosmetics or game boosters.

Roblox also has Premium memberships that you can buy that give players access to premium-only features, including benefits inside of individual experiences and the ability to trade items with other players. Those memberships cost between $4.99 and $19.99 depending on which tier of membership you buy.

Robux 

Whether you’re buying an in-game bonus to help you overcome an obstacle or a cosmetic item to make your avatar look extra cool, you pay for those purchases using an in-game currency called Robux.

There are a few different ways to get Robux:

• The simplest method is just to buy them. You can purchase Robux directly from Roblox’s website or as a gift card from a third-party seller like Walmart or Amazon.
• Robux are included in Roblox’s premium membership plans, as well. Depending on which plan you get, you will receive between 450 and 2200 Robux each month.
• You can get Robux as part of an item trade between two players online, although this is only possible between premium members. And Roblox takes a processing fee out of the transaction.
• You can earn Robux by creating games or assets and selling them in Roblox’s store!

Once you have Robux, you can then spend them at the Roblox store or to get items in different Roblox experiences.

Roblox in-game purchases

Roblox has a variety of different things that you can buy in the game that range from purely cosmetic items to private servers where you can play games with your friends!

Here are some of the things you can buy in Roblox:

• Cosmetic Items – Cosmetic items are virtual clothing for your character, and can include anything from shirts and pants, to new hair styles, to avatar skins that make you look like a robot! These don’t do anything other than change the way you look.
• Effect Items – You can also buy in-game items that cause some sort of effect in the game. Some of these can be purchased in the Roblox store and then brought into specific experiences, while others are bought from within an experience and only used there.
• Game Access – While many game experiences in Roblox are free to play, some games require players to purchase access using Robux to get in. One such game is the very popular Bloxburg, which players have to buy for 25 Robux before they can play.
• Private Servers – Some experiences in Roblox allow players to create private servers that can only be accessed by specific players. If you want to create a private server for one of these experiences, it will often cost 10-100 Robux per month to maintain that server.

Gambling 

Many of Roblox’s experiences make use of a mechanic known as “loot boxes” as a way of distributing in-game items. Each loot box that the player buys has one or more item out of a variety of possible items inside. The player does not know which of these items they will receive.

Many governments have expressed concern over these loot boxes and have compared them to gambling, since players are paying for the chance to get what they want. So, is playing Roblox considered gambling? It’s complicated. 

The concern is that exposing children to gambling in this way can be addictive, and may predispose them to gambling in real life when they get older. As such, loot boxes are not recommended for kids. In fact, some governments around the world have begun regulating loot boxes, or banning them altogether. Even so, it is still legal in most countries. 

For the moment loot boxes are still present in many Roblox experiences for kids. This means that if your child plays Roblox, they will most likely see them.

Can you make money on Roblox?

One of the interesting things about Roblox for kids is that most of the experiences and assets on Roblox are made by other players, and not by Roblox itself. When people spend Robux inside these player made experiences or buy player made items, most of those Robux go to the person who created them. These are considered “earned Robux” and can be exchanged for real-world money! 

In fact, Roblox game development is a great way for kids (13 and over) to earn money in Roblox!

Roblox Education

Most Roblox players log in because it’s a fun experience. After all, Roblox is a game platform! But Roblox is also an incredibly flexible platform and an easy entry point to learning real-world coding skills. This makes it an excellent choice of platform for kids interested in learning to code!

What Is Roblox Studio?

Game development is a complex, but rewarding, skill to learn. Making a game requires the ability to understand and modify code, to create assets for objects in the game, and to create a story that will bring your game to life!

Roblox Studio is a set of tools (called an IDE) that Roblox provides its developers to make doing all of that easier. It includes 3D-modeling software, Lua scripting interfaces, and tools for testing, debugging, and publishing experiences. In fact, it includes almost everything that a kid would need to learn game development!

With some patience and creativity, anyone can make a Roblox game, including kids. Roblox provides its own easy-to-use game editor, called Roblox Studio, where games may be created without any coding skills.

How to Make a Roblox Game

This tutorial shows kids how to create a game and enhance a premade template. It will teach them about the basic functions of Roblox Studio, such as changing block colors, moving, scaling, and rotating those blocks as well.

By the end of this tutorial, you will have a simple obby to play. You can even make your obby public for others to play.

10 Steps to Make a Simple and Fun Roblox Game:

1. Download and Launch Roblox Studio
2. Explore the list of templates
3. Select the “Obby” template 
4. Explore the game workspace
5. Give the Obby color
6. Resize some of the blocks
7. Change the speed of some obstacles
8. Develop player-harming obstacles
9. Enhance the appearance of an obstacle
10. Test your game!

Step 1 – Download and Launch Roblox Studio

We’ll be using Roblox Studio for this tutorial. If you don’t have the editor, you can download it here.

Launch Roblox Studio on your computer.
     

Step 2 – Explore the List of Templates 

Click on the “New” tab when Roblox Studio is open. You will see an option at the top for “All Templates”.

Step 3 – Select the “Obby” Template

From the list of templates, click to select “Obby” and wait for the game to load.

Each template is a pre-made world that you can use as a base for your own games.

Step 4 – Explore the Game Workspace

You should see a big green block that says “Start”. This is where the player will spawn when they start the game. Use the WASD keys and your mouse to move your player around.

Step 5 – Give the Obby Color

Next, personalize your game with custom colors. Click on one of the gray blocks after the green “Start” block. 

In the “Home” tab, select “Color” and a drop-down box will appear. Click on a color of your choice for the block. Then, repeat this for as many blocks as you want afterward.

Step 6 – Resize and Move Some of The Blocks

To make it more difficult, make some blocks smaller and change their position.

Go to the blocks after the next spawn point, the block with the blue star. In the “Home” tab, next to the “Select” tool, use the “Scale” tool to decrease the size. Then, use the “Move” tool to position these blocks however you want.

Step 7 – Change The Speed of Some Obstacles

After the next spawn point, you will see some purple blocks. These are called conveyors and they push the player in different directions. 

Click on a purple block, look in the explorer window, and click the drop-down option. Then, drop down the “Configuration” folder, and click on “Speed”. Change the value to either speed up the conveyor or slow it down. You can do this for as many conveyors as you’d like.

Step 8 – Develop Player-Harming Obstacles

These red blocks harm the player when the game is played.

In the next section of blocks, use the “Scale” tool from the Home tab and make the red blocks bigger or smaller. You can also use the “Move” tool again to reposition them how you’d like. 

Step 9 – Tilt An Obstacle

In the next section of blocks, use the “Rotate” tool to rotate some of the blocks in this obstacle. Click and drag the blue circle to make the blocks have different vertical rotations.

Step 10 – Test Your Game

Once you’ve updated the template with new obstacles and designs, you’re ready to test your game.

Test your game by pressing the blue “Play” button at the top of your screen. 

In only 15 minutes, you’ve created your own Roblox obby. Great job!

How to make a game public on Roblox?

When you’re ready to share your game with the world, you can make it public on Roblox.

In the editor, click on “File” on the top left-hand corner of the screen. There you will see the option, “Publish to Roblox” in the menu.

Then, a pop-up menu will appear where you can give your game a name and description. When you’re done with this, you can click the blue “Create” button.

Congrats, your game is now published on Roblox!

Beginner Roblox Game Ideas

Kids can practice building any game they can imagine. With more time and practice, they’ll be able to build more advanced, larger games. If you need inspiration, try one of these beginner Roblox game ideas. 

• Zombie survival game – Players have to gather supplies and survive a zombie apocalypse
• Paintball team battle – players spawn on two different sides of a playing field and have to hit the other players with paintballs
• Wacky race – where players have to avoid obstacles and enemies while racing
• Pirate ship battle – Battle pirate ships by shooting water cannons at them.
• Build a base Tycoon – Allow players to build a base to defend against monsters by earning money and upgrading parts of their base.
• Superhero wars – Players choose their own superpower and battle others
• Town simulator – Players can live in a town where they work to earn money, can buy a house, car, etc.
• Haunted Obby – An obstacle course game where players have to not only do some parkour, but also avoid ghosts.
